Gov Makinde, Oyo Labour Unions Broker Peace Restored

The harmonious industrial relationship between Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde and labour unions have been restored.

The workers on Monday reopened the State Government Secretariat on Monday for business after a weeklong shutdown.

Governor Makinde assured the workers his administration would sustain the cordial relationship with them, which helped to enhance the growth, progress and development of the State.

The Nation reports that the unions under the umbrella body of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) and their affiliates for the whole of last week staged a peaceful protest which led to the shutting down of all entrance and exit gates of the Secretariat.

The unions had been at loggerheads with the government on six-point demands which border on remission of salary deductions, increase in pay of pensioners and approval of promotion arrears among others.

Despite entreaties, the unions insisted on only talking to the Governor in person, rejecting all forms of proxy.

The issue peaked when the protesters, joined by other members of the public observed the Friday Jumat on the open road in front of the state government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

On Monday morning, all the entrance gates reopened with workers and people who have businesses to do going about their activities.

In what could be described as a peace rally, the workers gathered at the entrance of the Governor’s office where they were addressed and union leaders.

The meeting held at the frontage of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, signalled the official call off of the protest.

Makinde said he had met with the union leaders where both parties apologised for the roles played in the rally that led to the loss of revenue for the State.
