Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah on Tuesday expressed strong support for the Federal Government’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, stating the policy demonstrated “courage” and was necessary for Nigeria’s economic stability.
Speaking at an event, Gov. Mbah said the swift policy action by President Bola Tinubu’s administration immediately won him over. “I fell in love with Tinubu when he announced the subsidy removal,” Mbah said, stressing that the decision was critical for the country’s progress.
The governor argued that the removal, despite its initial hardship, was a necessary step towards fiscal discipline and economic reform. He praised the President for taking a difficult but essential decision immediately upon assuming office.
“It takes courage to be able to make a bold move like that,” Gov. Mbah stated. He highlighted the economic consensus that had long recognized the subsidy as a fiscal drain, noting that it required bravery to implement the widely agreed-upon reform.
Mbah’s comments align with a growing sentiment among state leaders who view the policy as a foundation for long-term fiscal restructuring, freeing up federal resources that can be redirected to critical infrastructure and human capital development across the 36 states. The governor also emphasized his own administration’s commitment to internal reforms to complement the federal effort.
