Laycon, a former Big Brother Naija winner, is the first rapper from Africa and Nigeria to join the Grammy (Recording Academy) Board.
The Recording Academy bestows the Grammy Award, or simply Grammy, to honour “Outstanding Achievement in the Music Industry” in the United States. A gilded gramophone is pictured on the trophy.
The Recording Academy nominated Nigerian rapper Laycon as one of the voting members for the upcoming 65th Grammy Awards on October 18, 2022. The ceremony, scheduled for 2023, will honour rappers that are part of the Hip-Hop genre.

The 50th anniversary of hip-hop is coming up in 2023, which will be a significant turning point in music history. Grammy will invite Recording Academy voting members who are members of and experts in the rap community to kick-start the celebration of this historically significant genre by casting their First and Final Round votes in the Rap Field and categories. While creators across all genres and crafts will be recognised at the 65th GRAMMY.
