Guardiola’s Double Treble Achieves Unparalleled Distinction Among Treble-Winning Coaches

Pep Guardiola has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first manager to secure the treble with two different teams.

His Manchester City squad accomplished this momentous accomplishment in the just concluded 2022/2023 European season, culminating in a thrilling 1-0 victory over Inter in the UEFA Champions League final late on Saturday. The decisive goal was expertly netted by Rodri, sealing Guardiola’s place in the annals of football history.

Several managers have previously attained the coveted treble, a triumph that entails winning three major trophies in a single season. The trailblazer in this regard was Jock Stein, who led Celtic to a triumphant treble campaign in 1966/1967. Following in Stein’s footsteps, Stefan Kovacs replicated the feat with Ajax in 1971/1972, and Guus Hiddink achieved the same milestone with PSV in 1987/1988.

Sir Alex Ferguson was added to the list with his success at Manchester United in 1998/1999. Guardiola himself secured his first treble in the 2008/2009 season, his first year as manager of Barcelona. In a fitting display of his managerial prowess, he conquered Ferguson’s Red Devils in the UCL final. Jose Mourinho, Guardiola’s long-time rival, was the next to join the elite club, leading Inter to treble glory the following season by eliminating Barcelona from the UCL along the way.

Other notable managers, who have enjoyed the treble triumph include Jupp Heynckes with Bayern Munich in 2012/2013, Luis Enrique with Barcelona in 2014/2015, and Hansi Flick, who guided Bayern Munich to success in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and UCL during the 2019/2020 season.
