France forward Antoine Griezmann has appealed to Atlético Madrid supporters for forgiveness over his controversial move to FC Barcelona, admitting he made a mistake by leaving the club.
The striker made the emotional remarks while reflecting on the strained relationship that developed with Atletico fans following his 2019 transfer to Barcelona.
The 35-year-old, who stated this during his final appearance at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano as an Atletico Madrid player, insisted that he made a mistake by joining the Catalan club.
The Frenchman will leave Atletico Madrid to join Major League Soccer side Orlando City in the summer, after spending a 10-year career across two spells with the LaLiga giants.
Speaking after Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win against Girona on Sunday, Griezmann, who provided the assist for Ademola Lookman’s goal, gave an emotional speech to the home crowd.
Griezmann said, “Please forgive me. I was young, and I made a mistake in joining Barcelona.
“I did not understand the love I had here. I recognized my mistake and did everything to come back and enjoy it here.
“I didn’t win LaLiga or the UEFA Champions League, but your love is what matters.”
