Idemili South Mayor Warns Against Indiscriminate Dumping Of Refuse

…Says Violators Risk Fines

The local government Chairman of Idemili South, Hon Amaka Obi, has raised an alarm over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages, roadside, streets, and other unapproved spots in the council area.

The mayor while speaking during an inspection of several markets, including Nnobi and Awka-Etiti markets, as part of the environmental sanitation exercise,
maintained that violators risk facing fines and punishment.

Obi stated that it had been observed that most people in markets dump waste indiscriminately, polluting the environment and creating a climate of uncleanliness. She warned such individuals to take note of the provisions of the Environmental Sanitation Law.

The local government boss emphasized that any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this law commits an offence and, upon arrest, shall pay a penalty of twenty thousand naira (N20,000) to the local government. She added that the local government can no longer tolerate the unhealthy practice of dumping waste indiscriminately.

“All approved markets in the council area have designated areas for refuse disposal, but many people habitually dump refuse anywhere they choose, putting public health at risk.

Also speaking, the incoming Mayor, Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, noted that there’s a law against this and henceforth, the local government will not hesitate to enforce it and prosecute offenders.

Ilogbenu urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment and avoid the unnecessary expenditure of N20,000 in fines.
