Electoral watchdog has slated the next presidential and national assembly elections for February 20, 2027, with state governorship and legislative polls to follow on March 6, amid worries over pending legal tweaks that could disrupt preparations.
The Independent National Electoral Commission unveiled the timeline Friday at a briefing in the capital, where chairman Joash Amupitan outlined the framework. The agency wrapped up the schedule on February 4 and forwarded it to parliament, but flagged potential adjustments tied to the stalled Electoral Act amendments.
Delays in ratifying the reforms have sparked concerns, as they might alter key deadlines in the plan. The 2027 contests come after the contentious 2023 vote, which saw Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress triumph amid opposition challenges over transparency and result uploads.
