Former Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has recommended Victor Osimhen as the ideal successor to Robert Lewandowski at the Catalan club.
Speaking to Turkish broadcaster NTV Spor, the Spain international said the Nigerian forward would be a strong addition after Lewandowski’s move to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.
“Lamine Yamal is a fantastic player, but I would not prefer him playing as a number nine. If Ferran Torres leaves, I would strongly advise Deco to sign a striker. I do not think Atletico Madrid will let Julian Alvarez go,” Iniesta said.
“I would suggest they sign Victor Osimhen. He is a fantastic goalscorer and one of the best replacements for Robert Lewandowski.”
Osimhen, the 2023 African Player of the Year, impressed last season with Galatasaray, helping the Turkish side claim the Super Lig title with 15 goals and five assists in 22 league appearances despite injury and international duty.
Barcelona have signed Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon but still lack a recognised centre-forward. Sporting director Deco continues to prioritise Alvarez, though Atletico Madrid have shown no interest in selling the Argentine.
Osimhen’s wage demands, reported at around €15 million net per season, and Galatasaray’s valuation of €70-75 million have complicated any potential deal. The striker has indicated willingness to accept a pay cut to facilitate a move.
Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are also linked with the 52-cap Super Eagles international as the transfer window nears its close.
