Great nations are built on the pillar of patriotism. For instance, Rome, one of the greatest empires in history became what it was because of the patriotism of its citizens. Horace the Roman lyric poet captured how devoted Romans were to their country in this apocalyptic line of one of his Odes: Duce et decorum est pro patria mori, “it is sweet and fitting to die for one’s fatherland.” The last words of Nathan Hale, an American patriot hanged for spying on British troops on September 22, 1776, was “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
So patriotism is determined by how much of sacrifice one is ready to make for one’s country. This is what Nnamdi Kanu, the rearrested leader of IPOB epitomizes. Every Nigerian, no matter the person’s profession or which part of the country the person comes from, agrees that the country is not working. Everyone feels that something needs be done but no one has the courage to say or do it. The political elite who don’t want to lose their patronage are fighting so hard to maintain the status quo. Civil servants, business people and the common men on the street want Nigeria to change but everybody is scared. No one is ready for the enormous price required to change Nigeria.
In all this, there is only one man alive in Nigeria today who is not afraid to lose everything to salvage the situation. The name of that man is Nnamdi Kanu. Love him or hate him, Kanu represents the aspiration of every Nigerian, especially the common men. He is the only Nigeria alive today, who has shown his readiness to lose everything to get Nigeria fixed. Kanu is a rare breed. Nigeria may not get his kind in hundreds of years and that is why nothing must happen to him!
