A prominent faction within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has moved to suspend the party’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, citing misconduct and internal turmoil.
In a statement, the group said the suspension was carried out in line with Sections 57, 58 and 59 of the PDP Constitution, accusing Damagum of “incompetence, financial misconduct and abuse of office.” They also announced the suspension of other party officials deemed to be acting against the party’s interest.
A source close to the faction told ANN: “We have resolved to suspend the National Chairman … for incompetence, financial misconduct, and inconsistent loyalty to party ideals.”
The development marks yet another twist in a prolonged internal power struggle in the PDP, which has seen rival factions jostle for control ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Leaders from the Damagum camp have not publicly responded to the suspension order. Political analysts believe the move could complicate the PDP’s unity and electoral readiness in the months ahead.
