JUST IN: U.S. Embassy Warns About ‘Potential’ Anti-War Protests in Abuja Today

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued an urgent security alert advising all American citizens in Abuja to remain indoors Wednesday, citing a high potential for demonstrations linked to the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran.

The alert, issued ahead of what intelligence suggests could be a volatile day in the Federal Capital Territory, reflects growing concerns that the regional fallout from the Middle East crisis is beginning to ripple into West Africa.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that there is a high potential for protests in Abuja today, March 4, 2026, due to the current conflict with Iran,” the Embassy said in the security notice.

The warning drew on a recent pattern of unrest in the capital. “Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces,” the Embassy noted, underscoring the potential for demonstrations to turn dangerous without warning.

The Embassy issued an unambiguous directive to its nationals: “The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4.”

Americans in Abuja were further advised to avoid areas where protests are taking place, steer clear of large crowds, and exercise heightened caution if they find themselves unexpectedly near any gathering. Authorities urged citizens to monitor local media, keep a low profile, and carry proper identification at all times.

The Embassy also called on Americans to stay alert in public spaces, specifically naming shopping centres, movie theatres and places of worship as environments requiring extra vigilance. Additional safety guidance included familiarising oneself with emergency exits upon entering any building, varying travel routes to reduce predictability, and keeping mobile phones fully charged in case of emergency.

Despite the security warning, both the Consular Section of Embassy Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos confirmed they would remain open for business.

Americans in distress may contact the U.S. Embassy Abuja at +234 209 461 4328, or reach the after-hours emergency line at +234 209 461 4000. The U.S. Consulate General Lagos is reachable at +234 201 460 3400. Citizens may also contact the State Department’s Consular Affairs line toll-free at +1 888-407-4747 or +1 202-501-4444.

The Embassy urged all citizens to continue monitoring its official website at ng.usembassy.gov for further updates as the situation develops.

The alert comes as Nigeria’s own government is simultaneously managing the safety of thousands of Nigerian nationals living across the Middle East, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that have triggered retaliatory attacks across Gulf states.
