Kano Judge Remands Fellow Judges, Registrars, Cashier Over N500m Inheritance

A magistrates’ court in Kano has ordered the remand of a cashier with the Kano State Sharia Court Division, Hussaina Imam and 14 others, including judges, registrars and financial registers, for diverting N500m meant for orphans to their personal use.

The defendants were accused of committing offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, joint act, criminal breach of trust, theft and forgery, contrary to Sections 97, 79, 315 and 289 of the Penal Code.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) tendered by the police, the defendants: Hussaina Imam, Bashir Ali Kurawa, Saadatu Umar, Tijjani Abdullahi, Maryam Jibrin Garba, Shamsu Sani and others between 2020 and 2021 committed the offences in which Hussaina Imam used her official position as cashier in the Kano Sharia Court of Appeal to conspire with her co-accused and forged the letterhead and other papers of the court and stole money to the tune of N484,067,327:07 by authorising Stanbic IBTC to transfer the money to various bank accounts.

Similarly, in another separate charge, the defendants were arraigned for criminal conspiracy, joint act, criminal breach of trust and theft contrary to Sections 97, 79, 315 and 289 of the Penal Code.

All the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and their counsel prayed the court to admit them to bail.

The Magistrate, Mustapha Sa’ad Datti, ordered the remand of all the defendants in a correctional centre and adjourned the case to February 1.
