Viral video shows chaos on Nsukka–Ugwuogo Nike road; Nigerian Army reportedly intervened to clear scene.
Suspected kidnappers laid siege to the busy Ugwuogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka highway in Enugu State on Friday evening, creating a scene of panic and a total standstill as they blocked the route and engaged motorists.
The incident was captured in a disturbing video circulating on social media, which showed vehicles halted on the popular highway connecting Nsukka city to several northern communities in the state.
The video, posted by an X (formerly Twitter) user, was captioned: “K!dn@ppers were operating along Ugwuogo Nike by Opi, Nsukka, Enugu State at exactly 7 PM this evening. Police officers on duty reportedly fled for their lives until the Nigerian Army arrived at the scene.”
In the viral two-minute footage, a commuter can be heard describing the chaotic scene: “Happening life, Nsukka road. Road don block. East is no more safe. Nsukka hers. Everywhere is blocked. Happening now, life, life, kidnappers. We are stuck here because of kidnappers. Kidnappers. God help your people.”
According to the report, officers of the Nigerian Police Force who were initially on duty reportedly fled the scene upon the arrival of the attackers. The situation was allegedly resolved only after the intervention of the Nigerian Army.
The incident underscores the growing insecurity challenges plaguing major highways in Nigeria’s South-East region. No official statement from the Enugu State Police Command regarding the attack or the reported flight of its officers was immediately available.
