Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move seen as a significant shift in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso, who was the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), completed his registration at his political base in Kano, declaring on social media, “New dawn. We are ADC.”
The event drew several prominent political figures, including Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Aminu Tambuwal, alongside other senior opposition figures, signalling growing momentum around possible political realignments.
Also present were former Senate President David Mark, now ADC national chairman, and the party’s national secretary Rauf Aregbesola, as well as key members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, reflecting the former governor’s enduring grassroots influence in Kano.
Kwankwaso’s defection follows months of speculation over his political future and discussions around a broader opposition coalition. His exit from the NNPP had earlier been framed as part of a “strategic realignment” in response to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
