Legal Aid Committee Takes Human Rights Advocacy To Umunya Community

The Legal Aid Coordinating Committee, Anambra State, has extended its human rights outreach to Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area, sensitizing residents on their fundamental rights and offering support to vulnerable individuals with unresolved human rights-related cases.

The sensitization event, which held on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Umunya Development Union Hall, provided an opportunity for community members to engage directly with legal professionals, receive clarification on basic rights, and seek assistance in addressing legal grievances.

Led by Rose Okeke Esq, the legal aid team that visited Umunya comprised Damaris Nnajiofor Esq., Chinaza Ekwemeze Esq., Mrs. Ugochi Freeman and Dr. Gabriel Alonta, who all emphasized the importance of community-based legal education and access to justice for the underserved.

The interactive session featured one-on-one hearings and documentation of human rights complaints, as residents opened up about long-standing issues requiring legal intervention. Many expressed gratitude and optimism that their cases, now formally documented, would receive due attention and justice.

The initiative, this writer reports, is part of an ongoing effort by the Legal Aid Coordinating Committee to decentralize legal awareness, ensure social justice, and bring legal support closer to the grassroots.
