Legal Aid Coordinating Committee Assesses Inmates Challenges In Awka Custodial Centre

The Legal Aid Coordinating Committee, Anambra State has visited the Awka Custodial Centre to assess the welfare and legal standing of inmates, particularly those facing prolonged detention without trial.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
the Deputy Controller of the Awka Custodial Centre, Mr. Innocent Amaechi, who received the team, provided critical information on the state of affairs within the facility.

According to Amaechi, several categories of cases were observed including ‘Awaiting Trial Inmates’ who have spent two years or more without appearing in court, Inmates who have been granted bail but are yet to perfect their bail conditions, and Inmates with minor offences, some of whom have been granted bail but have not met the bail conditions, and others granted bail without the court explicitly stating the conditions.

The Deputy Controller granted the team access to interact directly with the inmates to understand why they have not been able to appear in court, with a view to facilitating possible legal representation.

The committee led by Rose Okeke Esq, included Chinaza Ekwemeze Esq. and Dr. Gabriel Alonta.

They assured the inmates of their commitment to assist in meeting bail conditions where possible, and to ensure legal representation for those in need.

The Legal Aid Coordinating Committee expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Awka Custodial Centre for their cooperation, and reaffirmed their dedication to protecting the rights of vulnerable persons in detention.
