Liverpool snapped Real Madrid’s undefeated start to the Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory at Anfield, their manager Arne Slot said, thanks to a headed goal by Alexis Mac Allister.
Mac Allister broke the deadlock in the 61st minute after a precise set-piece delivery from Dominik Szoboszlai, delivering Liverpool their first victory over Real Madrid this season in Europe.
“Our opponents are on a remarkable run of form — we played against an incredible side and performed how we have, that’s very positive,” Slot said, highlighting the strength of their La Liga rivals. He added: “It helps if you can play in front of these fans … it brings out the best in my players.”
Liverpool’s defensive unit also earned praise for keeping Real Madrid’s stars – Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior – quiet throughout the contest. Slot singled out 22-year-old right-back Conor Bradley for “outstanding” defence against Real’s explosive attackers.
Having recently ended a poor run in the Premier League, this win signals a revival of confidence for Liverpool. The result pushes them up to sixth in their Champions League group, level on points with Real but behind on goal difference.
