Local Govt Election: Anambra Assembly Amends Electoral Law

A bill for a law to amend the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024 and for other connected purposes has been passed at plenary on Thursday July 25th.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
after the first reading, the Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme through order 74 of the house, moved a motion for the second reading and was seconded by the Minority Leader Hon. Johnbosco Akaebuobi.

The lawmakers after making the necessary amendments at the committee of the whole, red the bill for the third time before passing it into law.

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze said the ammendment was necessary in order to conduct a credible local government election in the state as demanded.

The member representing Ekwusigo constituency Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme in his submission said the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024 is already a working document but that the amendment shows the readiness of the state and support of the House of Assembly to make sure that the election of the local government must come as quickly as possible in accordance to the demands of the people.

” As lawmakers, there are few areas we need to look-at so that we will be able to give a transparent and accountable election to ndi Anambra”. Ofodeme said

The member representing Ogbaru One constituency Hon. Noble Igwe and Hon. Patrick Obalum-Udoba representing
Anambra West said the amendment of the electoral bill is apt considering the importance of local government election in Anambra State which will be conducted soon as possible.

ANN gathered that the law will come into effect from Thursday July 26 2024.

The house adjurned and to reconvene on Tuesday 30th July 2024.
