Lockdown at White House After Shooting of Two National Guard Members Near Complex

The area around the United States National Guard’s patrol zone near the White House was placed on lockdown Wednesday after two guardsmen were shot in a “targeted” attack — an incident that has heightened security concerns in the U.S. capital.

The shooting occurred near the Farragut West Metro Station, just two blocks from the White House. Authorities say the assailant opened fire on the soldiers before being subdued and taken into custody.

At a press briefing, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel confirmed the violent act and said the Guard members were critically wounded. Meanwhile, the suspect — reportedly also injured — is under investigation.

Following the shooting, the White House activated a security protocol, with multiple nearby buildings locked down and a temporary halt ordered at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport due to security operations.

President Donald J. Trump, who was away from Washington at the time, condemned the attack on social media, pledging the shooter would pay a “very steep price.”

The incident comes amid ongoing debate over the deployment of over 2,000 National Guard troops to Washington — part of measures taken by the White House this year to address what the administration has described as rising crime. Critics argue the presence of military forces in civilian areas could heighten the risk of similar incidents.

Authorities say they are investigating the motive behind the attack and have appealed for calm as they pursue leads. The White House has since resumed normal operations.
