The prayer session declared by the Anambra State Government on Monday witnessed a low-turnout of worshippers.
The state government at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting with security chiefs, traditional rulers and religious leaders, in Awka, on Saturday, declared Monday, April 4, as a prayer session against those hiding under the Indigenous People of Biafra’s name to cause havoc in the state.
Our correspondent, who went round the major cities of the state such as Onitsha, Nnewi, Nkpor, Oba and Obosi, observed that worshippers were scanty at some of the Catholic and Anglican churches, which opened for the exercise which kicked off at 11am across the state.
No Pentecostal church was seen participating in the exercise in those communities
Markets, motor parks and business premises remained shut. The major roads were also scanty.
Some people who spoke to our correspondent said they stayed away because they feared gunmen might invade the worship centres to attack people as there was no ‘visible’ security on the ground.
In Awka there were skeletal activities as worship centres witnessed an increased number of worshippers, while some Pentecostal churches also participated in the exercise.
