Makinde Rules Out Defection, Says He’s “Comfortable in PDP”

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday quashed rumours of an impending switch from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, insisting he remains firmly committed to the group amid swirling speculations about his political future ahead of the 2027 elections.

The declaration came after Makinde’s closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the presidential villa, where he fielded questions from reporters, as captured in footage broadcast by state-run NTA television.

“No, no, no. I’m comfortable in the PDP,” Makinde told journalists when pressed on potential defection plans.

He underscored the value of cross-party collaboration on national challenges, adding: “And again, we may have issues in this country where you need a bipartisan approach. Where it won’t be an issue of maybe APC talking alone or PDP talking alone, where we will have to look at what is the best foot forward, in the interest of our nation. So when you get to that junction, you need everybody on board.”

Makinde, one of the PDP’s few remaining governors following a wave of departures to the ruling All Progressives Congress, is seen as eyeing the party’s presidential nomination for 2027.

Tinubu also hosted Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang separately, in what marked the latter’s first known engagement with the president since his recent defection from the PDP to the APC.
