Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has told supporters the club remains confident of clearing its name after reports that an independent commission found it guilty of 114 of 115 Premier League financial charges.
In an open letter published on Saturday, Al Mubarak said the Premier League process was far from over and that the club’s determination to prove its innocence was unchanged.
“Here’s what I said to my family: The Premier League process still has a long way to run, and our confidence and intent in proving the Club’s innocence is just as strong as when this began,” he wrote.
Al Mubarak, who has been involved with the club for 18 years, acknowledged that the development had raised questions among fans but stressed that strict confidentiality rules prevented the club from sharing further details at this stage.
“There are so many things that I would like to be able to share with you to help you understand why we feel so confident in our position,” he said. “But the strict confidentiality of the legal process and our determination to respect it means I cannot do that at the moment.”
The charges, referred to an independent commission in February 2023, relate to alleged breaches between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. They cover the provision of accurate financial information, player and manager payments, Financial Fair Play rules, profitability and sustainability regulations, and alleged failures to cooperate with the Premier League investigation.
City has consistently denied wrongdoing. Sanctions have yet to be determined and the club is expected to appeal. Possible penalties could include a points deduction, fine or other measures, though none have been confirmed.
Al Mubarak urged supporters to focus on the team’s upcoming fixtures and thanked them for their continued backing. “We have faced challenges together before and have prevailed,” he said. “Thank you, as always, for your constant support.”
