Massacre in Plateau as natives, herders clash

… Lalong directs security to arrest trouble makers

Several persons were reportedly killed , while several others were injured during a clash between the youths of Irigwe nation and herdsmen at Angwan Rukuba area of Jos during a procession for the mass burial of victims of Fulani attacks in Jebbu Miango community of Bassa Local Government Area of the state.

The procession for the mass burial, which took place on Saturday morning were for victims of July 29 and August 9, 2021 attacks of Fulani herders.

Witnesses said trouble started when the Irigwe people were moving for the mass burial and along the line sighted some hersdmen moving towards the direction in hundreds and the meeting of the two triggered violence that led to loss of lives at Rukuba road axis Jos.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Plateau State Command, ASP Gabriel Ubah confirmed the incident and said the security operatives have restored order in the area.

“At the moment the area is calm and residents are going about their lawful businesses.” adding that details of the casualties would be made public.

Reacting to the ugly development, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong condemned the attack in the Rukuba Road and directed security to fish out trouble makers in the area.

Lalong, in a statement by Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Makut Simon Macham warned trouble makers bent on fomenting trouble in Plateau State to desist as the Government will not allow any form of lawlessness to disrupt the peace of the State.

The Governor while reacting to the reported skirmishes around Rukuba road general area in Jos where some persons were reportedly killed including innocent commuters, condemned the act and immediately directed security agencies to swiftly identify and arrest the perpetrators while dominating the area to restore calm.

Lalong said the attacks on innocent citizens no matter their backgrounds will never be tolerated in Plateau State and those who are found to be behind such attacks will be dealt with decisively to serve as deterrence and restore public order.

He however commends security agencies for their immediate response leading to the arrest of some suspects and the restoration of calm to the area.

While commiserating with the families of those affected, the Governor assured all law abiding citizens that security has been beefed up around the area as well as the entire metropolis to forestall further breach of the peace.
