Merino Strikes Late as Spain Edge Belgium to Reach World Cup Semi-finals

Spain advanced to the 2026 World Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Belgium on Friday, as Mikel Merino’s late goal proved decisive at SoFi Stadium.

Fabián Ruiz opened the scoring for Spain in the 30th minute, only for Charles De Ketelaere to equalise for Belgium shortly before half-time. Merino, a hero in previous rounds, capitalised on a spill by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens to secure the win in the 88th minute.

Thibaut Courtois was forced off injured in the second half, adding to Belgium’s frustrations as they could not repeat their deep run from 2018. Spain will face France in the semi-finals in Dallas next week.

The European champions showed resilience and quality to overcome a competitive Belgian side, booking their place in the last four for just the second time in their history.
