Substitute Mikel Merino scored in the first minute of added time as Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals on Monday.
The goal, assisted by Ferran Torres, came after a largely cagey last-16 contest at Dallas Stadium and eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo from the tournament. Spain will face the winner of USA or Belgium in the last eight.
Portugal, who had dominated possession at times without creating clear chances, pushed forward desperately in stoppage time but could not find an equaliser. The result ends Ronaldo’s hopes of lifting the World Cup in what could be his final appearance in the competition.
Spain’s victory, though not their most convincing, showcased their ability to grind out results in knockout football. Coach Luis de la Fuente’s side progressed despite a low-key performance against a resilient Portuguese outfit.
