Messi receives Spain’s Princesa de Asturias Sport award, credits father’s insistence

Former Argentina captain, Dr Lionel Messi received the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport on Friday, calling the honour one that transcends his achievements on the football field.

The Inter Miami forward said his father was particularly excited about the recognition and pressed him to attend the ceremony despite a demanding match schedule.

“My father was extremely excited about this award,” Messi said, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. “We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, that I travel here to spend these days and receive the award.”

Messi emphasised that the award carried meaning beyond his playing career. “This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career,” he said.

He added that his father was delighted by the recognition. “Honestly, he was very happy about this recognition and that’s why I’m sure he’s enjoying it too.”

The Argentine is one of football’s most decorated players, with multiple Ballon d’Or titles, the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina and major successes at Barcelona.

The Princesa de Asturias Awards honour outstanding contributions in fields including sport, the arts, science and international cooperation.
