Michael Olise has become the outright record holder for most assists in World Cup history, surpassing Brazilian legend Pelé during France’s third-place match against England.
The Bayern Munich winger, playing for France, delivered two assists in the 6-4 defeat to England, taking his tournament tally beyond Pelé’s previous mark of six from the 1970 World Cup. Olise entered the bronze medal game on five assists and pulled ahead with key contributions to Kylian Mbappe’s goals.
Despite France’s loss, Olise’s performance in his debut World Cup was widely praised. He played eight matches in the expanded format, including knockout rounds, compared to Pelé’s six games in 1970.
The 24-year-old’s creative output has been a highlight of France’s campaign, even as the team fell short of the final. Olise’s record adds to his growing reputation following his move to Bayern Munich.
