Minister tasks Boundary Commission on border security

The National Boundary Commission has been urged to ensure effective border management for the prevention of conflict arising from border communities in the country.

The Attorney general of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami gave the call at this years’ African Border Day held in Abuja, with the theme ”Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for building the Africa we want”.

Represented by the Director International boundaries in the Ministry, Dr. Francis Onu, the minister said documenting border boundaries would go along way in stimulating peaceful coexistence and enhance economic growth among the border states in African region.

The Minister commended the National Boundary Commission for successfully demarcated the Nigeria-Benin Republic border, Nigeria-Niger Republic border, Nigeria-Chad border, Nigeria-Equatorial Guinea border, and Nigeria-Sao Tome boundaries and the ongoing Nigeria-Cameroon border, describing it as a good step in a right direction.

The Director General, National Boundary Commission, Mr. Adamu Adaji explained that, the event was designed to develop a framework for integrated border management approach that would address national security and ensure effective monitoring of inflow and outflow goods and services across the African continents.

In his good will message, a Traditional Ruler who is the Emir of Yashikira in Kwara state, Alhaji Umar Usman attributed border insecurity to lack of border community development and proper security measures

He also called on the Nigerian government to establish a military base in border communities to checkmate criminality
