The National Assembly has commenced review of proposals to create 55 new states and 278 additional local councils, a major restructuring move that could reshape Nigeria’s federal structure.
During a plenary session, lawmakers discussed several bills that seek to amend the constitution to accommodate the new states and council areas. The initiative aims to address concerns of marginalisation and decentralisation.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, described the plans as “a bold effort to deepen grassroots representation and correct historical imbalances.” He urged stakeholders to consider factors like viability, resources, and population in assessing the proposals.
Proponents argue the expansion will bring government closer to citizens and enhance development. Critics, however, caution about duplication, increased cost, and potential governance challenges.
As the debate intensifies, attention now turns to expert testimonies, public hearings, and the constitutional review committee’s role in finalising the proposals.
