National Grid Collapses Again, Power Generation Plunges to Near Zero

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed Wednesday afternoon, plunging the country into widespread blackout as power generation plummeted from approximately 2,918 MW to just 1.5 MW between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

According to the country’s official grid operator, the outage left nearly all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) without supply — only Ibadan DisCo recorded a minimal load of 20 MW, while most others registered zero.

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the blackout was due to disruption from the national grid, assuring customers that restoration efforts are underway in coordination with relevant stakeholders.

The repeated collapse underscores the persistent instability within Nigeria’s power sector, raising urgent concerns over infrastructure reliability and service continuity.
