Netflix Mulls Shock Entry into Premier League Rights Race — Report

Global streaming giant Netflix is weighing a potential bid for Premier League broadcast rights, positioning itself to challenge long-established UK broadcasters Sky Sports and TNT Sports, according to a report by The Times.

Industry sources cited in the report said Netflix is “actively considering” entering the bidding process when England’s top-flight puts new rights packages on sale, including a special bundle of festive-period fixtures.

The publication notes that “broadcast industry insiders believe Netflix could initially be tempted by the holiday package”, a move that would mark the company’s first major foray into live football.

Netflix has previously tested the waters in European football rights. According to The Times, the company made unsuccessful attempts to secure the UEFA Super Cup and also lodged a bid for Champions League rights in Germany for the 2027–2031 cycle, but has “yet to secure a deal” to bring top-level football to the platform.

A Premier League acquisition would represent a dramatic shift in Netflix’s content strategy as it looks to deepen its presence in live sports — an area traditionally dominated by legacy broadcasters.
