A charitable organization, Akachukwu Akonam Foundation (AAF), has trained and empowered widows under the foundation in various skills for them to become self reliant.
ANN reports that the empowerment took place at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Nnokwa during their 2023 annual widows’ day that also featured free medical services and distribution of Christmas gifts to all the widows.
Speaking, the Founder of the Foundation, Engr Simon Ukpaka emphasized that the purpose of the foundation is to give the poor especially the widows a voice.
He noted that being a widow is not a death sentence and encouraged the widows to see themselves as valuable members of the society and ensure they contribute meaningfully to the growth of the society.
Engr Ukpaka appreciated those that have contributed to the success of the foundation in the past ten years including Mrs Nneka Onyeali, Prof Benedict Oramah and many others and prayed God to bless them immensely.
The member representing Idemili South Constituency in Anambra state House of Assembly, Honourable Ebuka Igwe while addressing the gathering encouraged them to maximize the opportunity provided by Akachukwu Akonam Foundation for their good and that of the society.
He commended Engr Ukpaka for the initiative and assured his continued support for sustainability while calling on other affluent individuals in the society to emulate and replicate such gesture.
The Traditional Ruler of Nnokwa, Igwe Emmanuel Ajamma represented by the Palace Secretary, Mr Gilbert Obiegbu, commended Engr Ukpaka for his dedication to community development and urged him to sustain the tempo.
Some of the beneficiaries of the empowerment programme including, Ifeyinwa Ofoegbu, Nwogo Chebelu, Uche Obiekwe all thanked the founder for the support and assured to utilize the opportunity effectively.
The Coordinators, Pastor Walter Akachukwu and Mrs Chioma Anisi, during the event encouraged the widows to remain steadfast and trust in God while being committed to decent life.
The widows were empowered with ovens, grinding machines, commercial cooking equipments, refrigerators among others.
