Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel expressed approval Tuesday for the on-field spat between Super Eagles forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, viewing it as a healthy display of passion that could propel the team to success in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel downplayed fears of discord in the squad after the duo’s heated exchange during Nigeria’s 4-0 last-16 victory over Mozambique, insisting such confrontations reflect a winning mentality rather than internal strife.
“I like the fact that they both had an argument on the pitch. I like that they had a fight on the pitch. I want to see that,” Mikel said.
He added: “I’ve never seen a nice team that wins trophies.”
Drawing from his own career at club and international levels, Mikel explained that players who care deeply about results will challenge each other when performance dips, noting that harmony alone does not secure silverware and that strong personalities often clash due to high stakes.
The incident, which saw Osimhen berate Lookman over a pass before requesting a substitution, has sparked debate among fans, but Mikel urged viewing it positively, emphasizing that quick resolutions keep the focus on collective goals.
Nigeria, unbeaten in the 2025 edition hosted by Morocco, now prepares for a quarter-final against Algeria on January 10, with the team aiming for a fourth continental title amid scrutiny over player dynamics.
