Nigeria Bags Four CAF Nominations, None For ‘Player of The Year’

Nigeria has received four nominations at the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, mainly in the women’s categories, following the release of the shortlists.

Edo Queens goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma has been nominated for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year. She will compete against goalkeepers including Algeria’s Chloe N’Gazi, Cameroon’s Michaely Bihina, Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan, Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi and South Africa’s Kaylin Swart.

Nigeria has two contenders in the Women’s Young Player of the Year category: Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei, who plays for Benfica and the Falconets, and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi of Robo Queens and the Flamingos.

The Super Falcons have also been nominated for Women’s National Team of the Year.

The nominations come despite the absence of any Nigerian player from the Women’s Player of the Year shortlist. Notable omissions include Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade and former African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala, as well as goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

No Nigerian featured in any of the men’s categories, marking the first time since 2015 that the country has no representative in the Men’s Player of the Year shortlist.

The CAF Awards are scheduled to take place in Lagos in December.
