Nigeria Launches FreeTV Digital Platform Offering Over 100 Free Channels

Federal government on Wednesday launched FreeTV, a national digital television platform designed to deliver subscription-free access to diverse content across the country.

The presidency announced the rollout as part of Nigeria’s ongoing transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, promising households clearer pictures, more channels and increased local content.

“Nigeria will on June 17, 2026 launch FreeTV, a national digital television platform that will give households across the country access to free digital television, more channels, clearer pictures, and Nigerian content without monthly subscription fees,” the government stated.

Users will have access to over 100 national, regional and state channels covering news, sports, movies, music, children’s programmes, educational content, and dedicated stations in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages.

The service will be available via satellite, terrestrial transmission and the FreeTV mobile app, reaching urban centres as well as rural communities not covered by earlier digital switch-over pilots.

Nigerians will not need to purchase new televisions, as existing sets can work with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders. Those with suitable free-to-air decoders may require no additional equipment.

The platform is expected to boost the creative economy through regional production studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Benin, generating opportunities for content creators and technical professionals.

The government encouraged citizens to check decoder compatibility and download the FreeTV app in preparation for the final analogue switch-off scheduled for December 31, 2028.
