CJN Kudirat Kekere-Ekun Praises Admission to IAJ, Calls it a Moment of “Pride and Privilege.”
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has applauded the National Association of Judges of Nigeria (NAJN) following its formal admission as the 93rd member of the International Association of Judges (IAJ).
The significant development, which brings Nigeria into a major global judicial network, took place during the IAJ’s 67th Annual Meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan. The NAJN will now represent Nigeria’s judiciary within the international body.
In a statement released by her media aide, Mr. Tobi Soniyi, Justice Kekere-Ekun described the admission as a moment of “pride and privilege for Nigeria to join a community of judges committed to the rule of law, judicial independence, and the protection of human rights.”
The development is seen as an international endorsement of the Nigerian judiciary’s integrity, with the CJN’s office noting that the move “demonstrates international recognition and confidence in the Nigerian judiciary.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the association’s mission, stating, “Nigeria embraces this membership with humility, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility.” She added, “We are committed to further strengthening the independence of our judiciary, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring the continued protection and promotion of human rights in our country.”
The International Association of Judges, founded in Salzburg, Austria, in 1953, is composed of national judicial associations from across five continents. Before admitting the NAJN, the IAJ reportedly acknowledged the ongoing reforms implemented under Justice Kekere-Ekun’s leadership, even as it considered challenges faced by the Nigerian justice system.
