A frustrated Nigerian man has gone viral on social media after releasing a video plea urging President Bola Tinubu to consider selling the country to China or Ghana if his administration cannot control the spiraling cost of living, particularly the price of cooking gas.
The man’s emotional outburst, shared widely across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), reflected the desperation felt by many Nigerians grappling with rising costs, which were recently exacerbated by a brief strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
Economic Grievance and Direct Appeal
The man lamented the dramatic increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), stating that it had reached a critical threshold that average citizens can no longer bear.
He made a direct, desperate appeal to the president, alleging that the government’s policies were causing undue suffering while officials remained comfortable.
“Even 1kg of gas is now ₦2,000. I beg you in the name of God, if you can’t control Nigeria again, please sell it to China or Ghana so we can be under another country,” the man pleaded in the viral video. “You just want to turn the country into something else, and we the poor are the ones suffering.”
He also suggested a link between the rising cost and unresolved business disputes, adding: “Because there is an issue between you and Dangote, you decided to increase the price of gas. If you can’t control the country, please sell it to Gobe, I beg you. Settle your problem with Dangote because it’s affecting us.”
The video quickly sparked mixed reactions online, with many agreeing that the current economic hardship is unsustainable, while others criticized the extreme nature of his suggestion to ‘sell the country.’ The price of 1kg of cooking gas has reportedly surged to as much as ₦2,000 following the recent supply disruption.
