Nigerian Muslims In Joyous Mood As Saudi Arabia Sights Moon, Announces June 16th Sallah Day

The authorities in Saudi Arabia have announced that Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on June 16, 2024.

This announcement was made on Thursday, following the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent, which marks the beginning of the 12th month in the Islamic calendar.

As a result, Friday, June 7, will signify the start of the holy month, and the Hajj pilgrimage for the year 1445 AH (2024) will commence on Friday, June 14. The day of Arafah, a significant day of pilgrimage, will be observed on Saturday, June 15.

Therefore, the largest Muslim festival, Eid al-Adha, will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

This festival is notable for the ritual sacrifice of rams, which Muslims perform as an act of devotion and remembrance of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.

The day before the festival, Arafat Day, will be on June 15. Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court had previously called on all Muslims in the Kingdom to participate in the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent to determine the start of this final month in the Islamic lunar calendar and establish the exact day of the festival.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, according to reports by PUNCH. This festival is celebrated by Muslims worldwide on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
