Nigeria’s World Cup Top Scorer Ahmed Musa Retires From Int’l Football

Veteran Nigerian footballer Ahmed Musa has called time on his international career with the Super Eagles, concluding a 15-year tenure marked by record appearances and memorable triumphs, he announced on social media Wednesday.

The 33-year-old striker, who holds the national record with 111 caps, shared a heartfelt message reflecting on his journey from youth squads to senior team stardom.

“From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me,” Musa wrote, underscoring the pride and challenges of representing Nigeria.

He celebrated key milestones, including lifting the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations trophy and becoming the first Nigerian to net twice in a single World Cup game against Argentina in 2014. Musa added two more goals against Iceland in 2018, cementing his status as the country’s top World Cup scorer with four strikes overall.

“Winning the 2013 AFCON will always stand out,” he said, adding that his World Cup feats are “memories I will always carry with me.”

In his farewell, Musa expressed appreciation to teammates, coaches, officials, and supporters. “As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. I know I gave my best. I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Thank you, Nigeria. Thank you for everything,” he stated.

Domestically, Musa returned to Kano Pillars in October 2024 for his third spell with the club and has assumed the position of general manager for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign.
