The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council in collaboration with the, International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) Lagos Centre, has successfully launched a Strategic Communication Retreat and Learning Tour across the West African coastline.
This educational tour, which began on August 26, 2024, aims to enhance the professional skills of journalists while providing a much-needed break from their demanding routines.
The tour, which covers Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana, kicked off in Badagry, Lagos State. Under the leadership of Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of NUJ Anambra State Council, and Dr. Greg Wale Williams, Coordinator of the International Institute of Journalism, the initiative seeks to promote ethical journalism standards across borders.
Dr. Williams commended the efforts of Dr. Odogwu, highlighting the successful collaboration that made the program possible.
The tour included visits to tourist attractions, educational institutions, and interactions with Nigerian expatriates in Ghana.
One of the highlights was a meeting with the traditional ruler of the Igbos in Ghana, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu (Eze Ohazurume).
In their speeches, Dr. Odogwu emphasized the importance of the journey in broadening the journalists’ knowledge both within and outside their profession.
Dr. Monday Ashibogwu, the tour facilitator, stressed the need for journalists to stay updated with current realities to enhance their skills.
Dr. Lawrecia Agyepong, Director of the Centre for International Relations at the University of Media, Art and Communications, Ghana, expressed her delight at hosting the journalists, noting that the visit signifies greater achievements for the profession on an international scale.
Nigerians living in Ghana shared their experiences with the journalists. Mr. Elochukwu from Nsukka, who runs a restaurant in Kokomlemle, advised that those migrating to Ghana should come with skills or secure jobs beforehand to adapt successfully.
Mr. Izuchukwu Innocent Obinwa, an aspiring musician and staff at Go Xpress Transport Company, highlighted the challenges faced by those who migrate without proper connections.
His Royal Majesty, Dr. Ihenetu, praised the journalists for visiting his palace and shared insights into his journey to the throne. He emphasized the importance of maintaining cultural traditions and fostering good relationships with the host nation, Ghana. The king blessed the journalists and wished them a safe journey back home.
This tour not only provided educational benefits but also fostered camaraderie and cultural exchange, reinforcing the importance of ethical journalism in a global context.
