The Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South-East Zone C, has called on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to fully activate its mandate and deploy available budgetary resources and the region’s economic potential toward addressing the pressing developmental challenges confronting the South-East.
The Council made the call in resolutions reached at the end of its meeting held at Golphin Hotel, Awka, Anambra State. The meeting was presided over by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku, and attended by chairmen and secretaries of the five NUJ state councils in the South-East.
Call for Stronger Regional Collaboration
On governance and security, the NUJ South-East ZEC urged the South-East Governors Forum to strengthen collaboration among member states to attract federal projects, development partners and other interventions capable of accelerating regional development.
The Council also called for urgent and coordinated efforts to address security challenges confronting the region, stressing the need for sustained measures that would promote peace, safety and economic activity.
Rehabilitation of Internal Roads
The NUJ further urged state governments across the region to rehabilitate internal road networks, noting that improved roads would reduce pressure on major highways, enhance rural-urban connectivity and facilitate socio-economic activities within communities.
Urgent Action on Erosion
The Council also expressed concern over the persistent erosion menace affecting several parts of the South-East and called on governments at all levels to urgently provide and release funds for effective erosion control and environmental management.
Landlords were encouraged to adopt environmentally friendly building practices, while residents were urged to maintain clean surroundings as part of efforts to promote public health and environmental sustainability.
The NUJ South-East ZEC said the resolutions reaffirm the union’s commitment to advocating for sustainable development, security, environmental protection and the overall wellbeing of the people of the South-East geopolitical zone.
