Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reassured continued partnership with the National Youth Corps, NYSC in developmental strides as the scheme has over the years been noted for policies and programs targeted at uplifting the youths and development of the rural communities.
Governor Soludo stated this during the 2023 edition of the NYSC Corps Employers’ Workshop in Awka with the theme “Enhancing the Well-being of Corps Members for optimal Productivity”.
Represented by the Chairman, NYSC Governing Board and Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development, Honourable Patrick Agha Mba, the Governor appreciated the fact that the workshop is taking place at a time that the government is mobilizing forces to ensure that the youths of the State are appropriately directed, mentored, trained and maximally empowered to be entrepreneurs and employers of labour.Â
He added that the dream of the government can only be fast-tracked and actualized with the active involvement of the Corps Employers and urged NYSC staff and Corps Members in all the establishments in the State to be promoters of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development.
In his speech, Director General, NYSC, Mr Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed cautioned employers of corps members against aiding and abetting their absconment during their one year national service.
Mr Ahmed, represented by Mr Aluyor Osikhuemeh also identified delay in issuance of monthly and final clearance to deserving Corps Members and lack of provisions of their statutory welfare needs as other shortcomings of corps members employers that needed urgent attention.
According to the DG, the workshop would also be addressing challenges of poor treatment as well as lack of support for community service development projects.
Speaking, the Anambra State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Blessing Iruma expressed joy over declining reduction in cases of rejection of corps members by corps employers in the state.
She described corps members as highly productive, particularly when meaningfully engaged in an enabling environment and thanked Governor Soludo for his support to the scheme, also for creating enabling environment for the corps members in the state.
Appreciating Governor Soludo for the monthly stipend to corps members, Mrs Iruma called for upward review of the allowance in view of the prevalent economic situation.Â
She stated that the governor’s favourable disposition to issues concerning the scheme is a clear manifestation of his youth driven policies and his dogged determination to ensure that the state continues to be the light of the nation.
On her part, the state Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chima Udeh, said the workshop aimed at addressing the well-being and security of Corps Members for optimal productivity is crucial adding that over the years the NYSC has been contributing to the development of the state particularly in the areas of education, health care delivery, agriculture and infrastructure.Â
Others who spoke at the event include Chief Medical Officer, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku, Dr Joe Akabuike, Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Sir Chido Obidiegwu represented by the Director of Administration in the establishment, Lady Tina Ekenta and a resource person, Mrs Ngozi Ugwuoke while the President ASATU Youth Wing, Comrade Ken Okoli and Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Youth Development, Dr Nelson Omenugha were present at the workshop.
