Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has addressed the public reaction following his participation in the Jubilee of Hope event in Imo State, where he was seen personally serving food to less-privileged attendees.
The viral footage of Obi serving food at the charity event has stirred public debate, with critics questioning the motive behind the act, suggesting political undertones. But in a detailed statement released via his official platforms, Obi made it clear that the act was neither for media optics nor political mileage.
“That event was not about me,” Obi emphasized. “It was called the Jubilee of Hope, and its purpose is straightforward — to remind us all that true leadership is service, and that those who have must never forget those who do not.”
A Private Gesture, Made Public by Outsiders
Obi noted that the event was a private service outreach, and that he neither invited media coverage nor published any content about his involvement. However, third parties unrelated to his team shared photos and videos online, leading to a media frenzy.
“As expected, the usual naysayers and paid agents went to work trying to twist something sincere into something political,” he stated.
Jubilee of Hope: A Call for Empathy
The Jubilee of Hope, held in Imo State, is an initiative aimed at bridging the divide between the wealthy and the poor through humble acts of service. Obi was not alone at the event. He was joined by Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako, and other notable Nigerians who quietly participated.
“It wasn’t about the cameras; it was about conscience,” Obi said.
He further disclosed that he stayed longer at the venue after being asked by several poor attendees to serve them personally, stating: “I could not ignore them.”
“Humility Is Not a Campaign Strategy”
Peter Obi went on to explain that his philosophy of leadership is rooted in simplicity and humility, which he continues to live by in private life.
“Even now, in private life, I do not have a house help. When guests visit my home, I serve them myself. I live simply, I sweep, I clean, because for me, humility is not a campaign
