Presidential candidate Peter Obi has pledged that the Calabar Port and other ports across the Niger Delta would become fully operational under his administration if he wins the 2027 election.
Obi, the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), made the assurance in a post on his verified Facebook page following a town hall meeting in Calabar, which he attended with his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“I also assured the teeming crowd of participants and supporters that, under our stewardship, the Calabar Port would become fully operational, alongside other ports across the Niger Delta,” he said.
Obi said his administration would prioritise aggressive investments in education, healthcare and other critical sectors while working to lift Nigerians out of poverty. He also pledged to unite and secure the country.
On tourism, the former Anambra State governor recalled that Calabar, Obudu and other destinations in Cross River State were once preferred spots for Nigerian and foreign visitors. He attributed the decline in the state’s tourism value to poor governance and inadequate attention.
Obi pledged to restore Cross River to its former status, saying that if elected president he would personally spend his holidays at the state’s tourism destinations.
Before the town hall, Obi and Kwankwaso paid a courtesy visit to the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V. Participants at the meeting raised concerns about the Calabar Port, tourism, security, the economy and public welfare.
Obi urged NDC members and supporters to prepare to defend their votes on election day, citing what he described as continued hostility from the government.
