News making rounds online currently in Nigeria has it that a lady in her thirties disembarked from a vehicle on a bridge in Lagos after having a heated argument with her fiancé and jumped into the Lagoon. On hearing that the lady got a marriage proposal few days before the incident and that she was a member of the DSS, I have asked myself some questions.
a. What kind of argument could have made a lady fail to think twice before jumping into aLagoon in what seems to be a suicide?
b. Was she suffering from depression?
c. Did she have suicidal tendencies?
d. Did her fiancée tell her the wedding plans were over as at the time of the intense argument?
e. Was she manipulated by enemies?
I arrived at these questions after taken time to read and analyze some of the comments made in relation to this incident by others.
I read many especially women saying, “No man is worth dying for.” I wish to also ask if any woman is what dying for? This question is rhetorical and does not require an answer. Sometimes, people hastily conclude on issues they may have little knowledge about. It is possible that the situation that led to her suicide has nothing to do with a man or a woman dying for the other. What then happened?
Possibilities:
a. Depression is real. It is possible the lady irrespective of how beautiful she looks and intelligent she might be, was going through depression.
b. During arguments, it is important to be sensitive to the temperament of the persons concerned. Some persons may be too emotional and short tempered to withstand the tensions of an argument situation.
c. Period of dating or courtship should be genuine or sincere on the parts of both the male and female. I see no reason why such alleged argument that almost claimed or claimed a person’s life would ensue in the first place shortly after wedding engagement if those in the relationship really understood and love each other truly.
d. Some persons have suicidal tendencies, and need help.
e. It is good to be strong in prayers. Not everyone is happy when something good is coming one’s way. Why this situation after wedding proposal? We may wish and prefer a world free from evil but we are not living in such world. As long as the world we live in is concerned, evil is real
Conclusion:
No matter what, life is sacred and no one has right to take it but the giver himself. I pray the young woman finds the peace she was deprived of here in the great beyond. Nevertheless, we live in a mysterious and wicked world. Real killers to exonerate themselves of responsibilities for their crimes have staged suicides. A thorough investigation on the driver of the vehicle she was before allegedly jumping into the lagoon cannot be overemphasized.
