Osimhen, Adams Fire Nigeria into AFCON Semi‑Finals With 2‑0 Win Over Algeria

Nigeria powered into the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria on Friday, setting up a showdown with hosts Morocco after second-half strikes from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams ended the Desert Foxes’ resilient run in the 2025 tournament.

The Super Eagles, who entered the quarter-final with an unblemished record, broke the deadlock shortly after the interval when Osimhen headed home at the far post from a precise cross, capitalizing on Algeria’s first defensive lapse after a tournament where they had conceded just once prior.

Adams sealed the win midway through the second half, rounding goalkeeper Luca Zidane — son of French legend Zinedine Zidane — and slotting into an empty net after being released by Osimhen’s clever through ball.

Algeria, hampered by a lack of creativity, failed to muster a single shot on target against Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali, though Adams later struck the post with a header in a rare moment of threat for the North Africans.

The result propels Nigeria closer to a first AFCON crown since 2013, while Algeria’s elimination dashes their hopes of a third title following triumphs in 1990 and 2019.
