Abia State Governor Alex Otti disbursed compensation to 4,000 residents displaced by an upcoming airport project, while announcing the launch of subsidised electric buses from March 1 to ease transport costs and promote eco-friendly mobility in Abia State.
The payments, totalling unspecified sums, were made during a ceremony in the state capital, where Otti urged beneficiaries to invest wisely. “I urge you to use the compensation to invest in productive ventures, such as agriculture, trade, or small businesses, to improve your livelihoods,” he said.
The airport initiative, aimed at boosting economic connectivity, has displaced families across multiple communities, with Otti pledging fair redress. “We are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in our development agenda,” the governor added.
On the transport front, the electric buses will operate at reduced fares, subsidised by the state to counter rising fuel prices. Otti described the scheme as a step toward sustainable urban mobility. “Starting March 1, these buses will provide affordable, clean transport options for our people,” he stated.
The measures form part of Otti’s broader reforms since taking office in 2023, focusing on infrastructure and welfare in a region plagued by economic challenges.
