PDP Faction Moves to Screen Jonathan as Sole Presidential Aspirant for 2027

A faction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki will on Tuesday screen former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole presidential aspirant for the 2027 election.

The party announced in a statement on Sunday that screening for all aspirants would hold at 10 a.m., covering thousands of candidates across various positions.

According to the faction, 2,122 state house of assembly aspirants, 748 House of Representatives hopefuls, 198 senatorial candidates, 112 governorship contestants and one presidential aspirant are expected to undergo the exercise.

The statement did not name the lone presidential aspirant, but a party source confirmed to TheCable that it is Jonathan.

A 14-member screening committee, approved by the faction’s national executive committee (NEC) at its 104th meeting, will conduct the process. Members include former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau governor Jonah Jang, and ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi.

Other members listed are Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Abdul Bulama, Esther Uduehi, Tony Aziegbemi, Edo PDP chairman Sunday Solari and Anicho Okoro, who serves as administrative secretary.

“This publication is in accordance with the party’s guidelines and timetable for the conduct of the 2027 general election,” the statement added.

The development comes as the PDP remains divided into rival factions amid leadership disputes, with Turaki’s group positioning itself as a key player ahead of the polls.
