Peace Prize Looms: Trump Nods Compete with Journalists, ICJ

The winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, October 10, in a year dominated by the months-long campaign of former U.S. President Donald Trump to secure what is arguably the world’s most prestigious award.

Trump, who is now in his second term in office, has openly and repeatedly expressed his desire to join the exclusive list of four predecessors—Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1919), Jimmy Carter (2002), and Barack Obama (2009)—who have received the prize.

Nominations and Controversy

Trump’s name has been linked to the 2025 prize due to various diplomatic efforts, particularly his role in brokering the Abraham Accords and his interventions in conflicts in the Middle East and Asia.

He has been formally nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize by several foreign governments and leaders, including:

• Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel.

• The Government of Pakistan, which cited his “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” in a May conflict between India and Pakistan that ended in a ceasefire.

• Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet, who lauded Trump’s “extraordinary statesmanship” for his intervention in the Cambodia-Thailand conflict.

Despite his supporters’ efforts, experts are skeptical about his chances for the 2025 award. One historian, Asle Sveen, told Agence France-Presse (AFP): “Trump will not win the prize this year. I’m 100 percent certain”.

Other Contenders

The Norwegian Nobel Institute registered a total of 338 candidates for the 2025 prize, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations—a significant increase from the previous year.

Other notable names and organizations rumored or reported to be among the contenders include:

• Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a U.S.-based watchdog, for its advocacy during a period when the free press is under “historic assault”.

• Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza, for her work to highlight the destruction in Gaza.

• The International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate(s) will be announced on Friday, October 10, in Oslo, Norway, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10.
