At least 14 people were killed in a gunmen attack on a community in Nigeria’s Plateau State, police said, though local residents insist the actual toll is significantly higher at 27.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Jos North Local Government Area, where attackers opened fire on residents before fleeing the scene.
A police spokesperson confirmed the lower figure, describing the assault as a targeted operation that also left several people wounded. Residents, however, disputed the official count, claiming many more bodies were recovered from the area.
No group has claimed responsibility for the latest violence, which adds to a long pattern of communal clashes and banditry that has plagued parts of Plateau State for years. Security forces have launched an investigation, but no arrests have been announced so far.
